Our community consists of 48 paired single family homes in a common interest development on 12 acres. Built by AVCO (the original master plan developer of Laguna Niguel) in 1978/79, the homes were the continuation of the "patio homes" at The Foothills community to the south along Alicia, although our community was never a part of The Foothills. While the 4 floorplans are similar to The Foothills, AVCO made a few changes, mainly that our community homes were built as single family homes rather than condominiums, with front yards, driveways and on larger lots. Wet bars were added to 2 floor plans.
Our community was one of the first to be developed on our hill, other than the older homes at Crown Valley Highlands. When our homes were built, Alicia was a 2 lane road. Highlands came up from Alicia, but ended at Pompano. We were surrounded by empty hills. AVCO had planned to continue our homes all the way to the top of Clipper, but they exited the home building industry after our street was completed, and those remaining lots were sold to S&S Construction, who built other homes on those lots.
During initial grading of our hillside location, a prehistoric whale skeleton was discovered at the south end of our park. It was excavated and removed to the OC History Museum.
When new, our homes sold from the high $ 90,000s to the low $ 100,000s. There are 3 original owners from 1978 who still live here.
The name of our community was changed in May of 1990 from Foothill Patio Homes to Laguna Knoll to avoid confusion with the other Foothill Patio Homes.
Interesting trivia: Former Beatle Paul McCartney's aunt, Beryl Kendall, was an original owner of 29136 Pompano, and Paul and wife Linda would stay with her occasionally.
